There never was a video game of Casino Royale, but now Activision is making up for lost time with a title that incorporates both Casino Royale and its immediate sequel, Quantum of Solace. It’s primarily a first-person shooter, but it does switch to an over-the-shoulder view when hiding under cover or taking part in interactive cut scenes.
Back in 2005, with DanielCraig officially announced as thenew 007, EA scrapped an in-development original videogame basedon Pierce Brosnan and switchedtack to quickly createan adaptation of 'FromRussia With Love' starring SeanConnery. In parallel, thecompany also started work on a movie tie-in game based on 'CasinoRoyale'.
Before cameras rolled on the film, EA had access to theshooting script, set designs, production drawings, locationinformation and costume designs. This enabled the developmentteam to start work on the 3D models and game concepts inlate 2005, a couple of months ahead of Daniel Craig shootinghis first scenes as 007. Concept artwork and some 3D models for 'CasinoRoyale' werecomplete even before EA's latest game, 'FromRussia With Love', had hit the shelves. UnlikeActivision's eventual title 'Quantumof Solace' in 2008, that included missions basedon 'Casino Royale', EA had planned to set thegame in third-person perspective - much like theirblockbuster title 'Everythingor Nothing'. In recruitment advertisements posted duringthe early days of the project, EA boasted direct ties withthe movie'sproduction team, including Daniel Craig and the rest ofthe cast, director Martin Campbell, the script and marketingcampaign. EA had expected to release the game onthe next generation videogame platforms on the same dayas the moviehit theatres. At the time, Microsoft's Xbox 360 had onlyjust been launched and Sony's PlayStation 3 was still waitingin the wings. The Nintendo Revolution platform eventuallyturned in to the Wii. It was expected that 'CasinoRoyale' was going to be a launch title for the PS3 in Europe. |

A month later, in January 2006, it was leakedthat although the project was about 15% into development, productionof thenext generation platforms was been cancelled. Speculation mountedthat the title had fallen behind schedule on the new platforms.Development focus would shift to the current-gen consoles, Xboxand PS2, for which EA had just released 'From Russia WithLove'.
News of the game's existence started to becomewidely known in January 2006, but a few months later in May 2006,a bombshellwas dropped on 00-gamers: Activisionwere taking over the James Bond videogame licence, despiteEA having recently extended their option until 2010. Activisionpaid a reported$50m for the rights.EA stated that they were making a strategic decision to moveaway from licenced franchises, but rumours circulated that the 'CasinoRoyale' gamewas going to miss its release schedule and MGM were unhappyabout the prospect of lost revenue. The axe fell immediatelyon the 'Casino Royale' project at EA. The shift ofrights to Activision would not become exclusive until 2007, rulingout the new developer bringing a title to market in-line withthe move.
MI6 can now reveal some of the early 3D designs for levels basedaround the Venice in EA'sill-fated 'Casino Royale' game.
